Scrap log cabin quilt11/13/2023 If you just can’t cut 8 layers, do 4 at a time instead. I sent this Quilty Love Palette Picks Lucky Log Cabin off to Knot and Thread for quilting. this could be a scrappy quilt too Grab all of your 2.5 inch strips from your scrap stash and start sewing Long Arm quilting. (You will need a sharp blade in your cutter to cut 8 layers. I sewed up this Lucky Log Cabins quilt using my brand new Palette Picks bundle for Robert Kaufman. First, true up and cut 6 stacks of strips just like we showed with 2 fabrics. We used that measurement in the book because many people would start with fat quarters 18 in. Now, because of its simple construction, it can easily be made with pre-cut bundles, yardage or scraps, and appeals to beginners and advanced quilters alike. allows for an extra strip if needed, and 18” gives a lot of wiggle room. The mini log cabin block finishes at 4 and if you are not sure what to make with them, let me give you a few ideas. The exact size piece needed for each fabric would be 12 by 14 in., but we say 14-1/2 x 18 in. Enough about the scraps let’s talk about the quilt The center of this quilt is made up of log cabin blocks, sewn with value contrast. I wanted more variety than 6 fabrics, so it worked out perfectly to cut all 6 lengths twice from 8 different fabrics. A cutting scheme began to percolate! There are 16 blocks, each with 6 dark pieces. I bet you don’t know that if you add the length of the shortest strip in a Log Cabin block to the length of the longest strip, it will be the same as the total of the length of the next shortest and next longest, etc. Using fabric strips in different colors and widths, you can create stunning 4, 6, or 12 Log Cabin quilt blocks that showcase your scrap stash beautifully. The beauty of this design lies in its simplicity and versatility. I’m making a new version and all of the light fabric strips will be cut from the same fabric, but I’d like for the 6 dark strips to be scrappy. Log Cabin quilts have been a favorite among quilters for generations.
